Our app would be designed to help cases like this, hopefully reuniting pets with their owners more quickly. This shelter has a high reunification percentage, but we would love to help all shelters have a higher rate to have more lost pet stories with happy endings.
Roughiatou Sotelo, a truck driver, lost her dog, Panfilo, while on a work trip in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Despite returning home to Maryland without him, Sotelo tirelessly searched animal shelter websites and social media pages for lost pets. After 17 days, she discovered that Panfilo had been picked up by Santa Fe Animal Services and was at a shelter. Although there was a microchip mix-up, the shelter confirmed Panfilo's identity through photos Sotelo provided. Sotelo flew to Santa Fe to reunite with her dog. The touching reunion was shared on social media and garnered a significant response. The Santa Fe Animal Shelter, a no-kill shelter, receives thousands of animals each year and has a 40 percent reunification rate, higher than the national average. The shelter was deeply moved by the reunion and emphasized that such moments are why they do their work.
